Service · Hedge reduction
For hedges that have crept up past the fence line, past the window, or past what looks right against the house. A reduction is a bigger job than a trim, done in the right sequence for the species.
Heavier reductions on overgrown hedges in Rochester typically run £300 – £900, sometimes more where the hedge is long, tall, or the access is difficult (a lot of the Boley Hill and Cathedral-quarter gardens fall into that last category). We quote after a site visit for anything beyond a routine trim.
Deciduous species (privet, hornbeam, beech, hawthorn) will regrow from old wood, so a hard reduction in one visit is usually fine on those. Conifers won't. If you ask us to take a leylandii hedge down by four feet in one go, we'll tell you honestly that the result is a permanent brown scar down each side, not a smaller green hedge. That's a staged job - see the conifer page for how that works.
Depends entirely on species. Yew, beech, hornbeam and most native hedging will regenerate from bare wood within one to three growing seasons. Leylandii, thuja and other conifers will not - cut past the green and that face is brown for good. We'll tell you which category your hedge is in before we touch it.
